In a recent discussion with my Time Tamers Coaching Group, we delved deep into the concept of personal agency—our ability to make choices that shape our lives. This exploration highlighted the significance of perspective and mindset in the choices we make every day. One key mindshift we explored together was moving "From Time Pressure to Time Choice." Embracing the idea “I choose where my time and energy go today” serves as one of the three guiding principles I use to navigate feelings of overwhelm. This shift allows me to rewrite my time narrative, enabling me to enjoy the fruits of my labor more fully. I also use this principle to guide others through their journeys in our Time Tamers discussions.
“Personal agency is really about having the freedom to make choices.” This quote from our conversation encapsulates our understanding of agency. It’s not merely about the ability to act; it’s about empowering ourselves to choose how we navigate our lives, involving self-reflection and a clear understanding of our purpose.
To illustrate the choices we can make in our perspectives, I often share the story of two travelers on a journey to the summit of a distant mountain. Despite both reaching the summit, their experiences differ greatly based on their mindsets. What they choose to pay attention to, and how those thoughts impact the journey.
Traveler Annabelle felt burdened by her obligations, often saying, “I have to climb this mountain.” This mindset left her fatigued and questioning her ability to succeed. Traveler Bernice, however, embraced her journey with the mindset of choice, stating, “I choose to climb this mountain.” This shift allowed her to celebrate the beauty around her and view challenges as opportunities for growth.
The contrasting experiences of these travelers highlight the power of reframing our obligations into choices.
One of the most powerful takeaways from our discussion is the idea of shifting from a "have to" mentality to a "choose to" perspective. This reframing is crucial for unlocking our potential. “When we approach our obligations with a mindset of choice, we can transform our experiences from burdens to empowered journeys.”
We recognize our power to choose our feelings and perspectives on our journey. By focusing on what we can control and how we talk to ourselves, we can reframe the mundane tasks we face. We have the ability to move "From Time Pressure to Time Choice."
Mindfulness plays a vital role in recognizing our agency. “Where your energy goes, your focus flows.” Being aware of where we direct our thoughts and energy helps us pivot from feelings of obligation to empowerment. By raising awareness, we can actively choose how to spend our time and energy and gain clarity on what we see as our life’s work.
It’s essential for each of us to consider small actions we can take to embrace a sense of choice in our daily lives. “What small action can you take this week to embrace a sense of choice?” This simple yet profound question invites reflection on our daily routines and identifies opportunities for empowerment.
We can also apply the concept of agency to overcome procrastination by reframing tasks as choices rather than obligations. Here are some strategies to consider:
Here are some practical examples of how to shift from "have to" to "choose to" to finish with your convictions:
Making these small shifts in language can help you enhance your sense of agency in everyday situations. By embracing choice and transforming our time narratives, we can overcome procrastination and take meaningful action toward our goals.
Each of us is on an ongoing journey to build our agency, which requires self-awareness, reflection, and intentionality. By recognizing the power of our choices and reframing our mindset, we can transform our lives from a series of obligations into a more fulfilling journey of empowerment.
As we continue to explore personal agency, let’s remember: “The power lies in the perspective we bring to the journey.” Embrace your choices, celebrate your agency, and watch how it transforms your life.
~ especially those of us who can be a little off-center trying to function and find fulfillment in the mainstream world. This world values efficiency and productivity, which can require productivity techniques and hacks that some of us find
too mundane and soul-crushing, if not impossible to follow.
For me, I've found I can't follow mainstream productivity tools and hacks. I've had to learn to drive my brain, use its quirks and creativity to feel seen, make contributions to the world, and enjoy both work and home.
I like working with smart people who are ready to dump conventional productivity techniques to learn their true personal productivity by understanding how to drive their brains and discover their unique strengths to redesign their days with systems that complement them.
Let's start exploring together!
